Example of Women Entrepreneur

Puan Rasmuna binti Hamzah is the sole owner of TNR Management Services. Running business in Bandar Seri Botani Ipoh Perak, the mother of four daughters share some tips of her success.

Q: What is the name of your company and services provided?

A: TNR Management Services and we are a company secretary that take care of our client`s company documentation since the company incorporated. TNR also provide other services such as accounting, taxation, GST and auditing (under license).

Q: How many years have you been in this industry?

A:  It had been 21 years since I first entered this industry but TNR was only incorporated 8 years ago.

Q: What is your marketing strategy?

A: We focused on our networking. We know lots of people and market ourselves to our associates. Some of our clients are the associate of our associate and our services travel from mouth to mouth. We also give out pamphlets with our contact details to convenience stores.

Q: What is your experience of handling your employees and company?

A: I started business since 1997 with one of my associate in a partnership under RRH Management Services. Firstly, I have only one employee but then it gradually increases. All of my employees before and now are Muslims so they have to perform their prayer and cover their ̒aurat'. We also have students interning in TNR. Sometimes there’s up to 5 students interning at the same time.

Q: How did you deal with your clients?

A: Firstly you have to know your client because clients are ego, some are honest and some of them have zero knowledge about legal company needs. If it is highly educated client you can go straight to discuss the legal issues but if the client is not highly educated, you have to tell them the issues up to their level. Dealing with ego client is quite tricky because you have to listen and follow their way of doing your job.

Q: Do you have any tips to work under pressure?

A: Relax. Sleep early and get a good night rest. Don’t sigh and stressed over stress but find out the reason of your stress whether it is problem from work, personal problem or family problem. Solve your problem first then you can continue working. Usually when we are working in a field we like, we rarely get stress because of work. If you are stressed out in workplace because of your coworker or employees or employer, find out why and what is the problem. Solve your problem then the stresses are gone.

Q: Any advice to young people if they want to be successful?

A: Ask questions, work hard and be discipline, don’t run away from your responsibility and cut off from work. Reach out and take whatever opportunity   the company gave out to gain experience even though it is not your field of work. Help your friends from other department and other field so that we can gain more knowledge and experience.

Understanding competency

Short movie : "Soar" by Alyce Tzue

*p/s : you are advised to turn off the blog background music while watching this movie to get the full quality of the animation. tq :)

WHAT IS COMPETENCY?

Can you get the general picture on what is actually competency from the short movie "Soar" by Alyce Tzue?

It is about a young girl who try her best to help a tiny little boy to fix his plane even she has failed for several times and then she made it at last ! Is there any secret to share?

Yes, actually there are one - and it is called COMPETENCY .

Based on research, competency is about utilizes appropriate methods for interacting sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyle preferences (competency from : Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice)

In other words, competency is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently in things that you love most. So, have you find out where is yours?

Frederick Herzberg

  • Frederick Irving Herzberg was an American psychologist.
  • one of the most influential names in business management for introducing Job Enrichment and The Motivator-Hygiene theory

TWO FACTOR THEORY

This theory states that there are certain factors in the workplace that causes in job satisfaction, while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction.

  1. Herzberg proposed the Motivation-Hygiene Theory also known as the Dual Structure Theory or Two Factors Theory of job satisfaction
  • people are influenced by two set of factors :
          * Motivation Factors

          * Hygiene Factors

this theory suggests that to improve job attitudes and productivity, administrators must recognize and attend to both sets of characteristics and not assume that an increase in satisfaction leads to an decrease in unpleasurable dissatisfaction

Example :

Abraham Maslow

  • Abraham Harold Maslow was an American psychologist and is known for his concept "Maslow's hierarchy of need"
  • He is considered the founder of humanistic psychology. His family life and his experiences influenced his psychological and sociological ideas.
  • Humanistic psychologists believe that every person has a strong desire to realize their full potential, to reach a level of  "self-actualization".
  • To prove that humans are not simply reacting to situation, but trying to accomplish something greater.
  • Maslow studied mentally healthy individuals instead of people with serious psychological issues.

  • It is a theory that everything humans do stems from physical needs.
  • Maslow's later arguments was that humans are not motivated simply by hunger and thirst but by higher goals.
  • Generally, people determined a character wants and needs using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

 ABOUT MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

  • FIRST FOUR LEVELS often referred to as deficiency needs (D-needs)
  • TOP LEVEL is known as growth or being needs (B-needs)

The deficiency needs are said to motivate people when they are unmet. The need to fullfil such needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without food, the more hungry the will become.

for example :
one must satisfy lower level needs before progressing to top level growth needs. when a deficit need has been satisfied, our activities become habitually directed towards meeting the next set of needs that we have yet satisfy. however, growth needs continue to be felt and may even become strong once they engaged. once these growth have been reasonably satisfied, one may be able to reach the highest level called self-actualization.

Fredrick Taylor Theory

Frederick Winslow Taylor
  • Taylor sought to create a mental revolution among both workers and managers by defining clear guidelines for improving production efficiency.

FOUR PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT

  1. Study each part of the task scientifically and develop a best method to perform it.
  2. Carefully select workers and train them to perform a task using the scientifically developed method.
  3. Cooperate fully with workers to ensure they use the proper method.
  4. Divide work and responsibility so management is responsible for planning work methods using scientific principles and workers are responsible for executing the work accordingly.
  •   His "pig iron" experiment is probably the most widely cited example of scientific management.

While working for Midvale Steel Company, Taylor needed to find ways to make workers operate faster and better.

In this experiment with the pig iron he decided to research whether it was possible to make them move 47 tons of pig iron instead of 12 1/2 tons.

RESULT OF THE EXPERIMENT

  • It's absolutely necessary that only workers that capable or suitable of performing each specific task were employed.
  • Rule of thumb (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/rule-of-thumb.asp) had to be substituted with a much more effective method-material reward.
  • Workers should be allowed enough rest and better work conditions.

  • Overall, Taylor achieved consistent improvements in productivity in the range of 200%. He affirmed the role of managers to plan and control and of workers to perform as they were instructed.

for example :
Tesco's Employee Reward Programmed has some similarity to Taylor's theory. this programmed are one of motivational factor. however, there are factors other than money which motivate people in both their personal and working lives. Tesco go beyond Taylor theories and gives more than just simple pay increases. its support the varied lifestyles of individual employees through relevant and targeted benefits.
